I want to be a mangaka stamp by *oceanchan:iconoceanchan:

Artist's Comments

Whoa, I practically wrote a mini essay here... anyway, if you're going to read it, please read through the whole thing, thank you. :3

She's supposed to be holding an ink pen buttt... you can barely see it...

As for this stamp, I didn't like any of the other ones, so I made my own.

As for this ISSUE, that's... a different story.
I hear so many weeaboos running around saying they want to go to Japan, be a mangaka, etc. When I was younger, I said that too (if you all don't recall, I was pretty bashed for it. I think).

Truth is, yeah, I'd still LOVE to do that, but it's not at all tangible.

1. I pretty much only know 10% of the language, I'm too lazy to learn the rest - let alone WRITE it (and that'd be a big part of being a mangaka there, obviously).

2. I don't use traditional ink pens, screen tones, or the same tools mangaka's do. Actually, it's a pretty tedious way of doing it when you think about it. I'm still amazed at how Arina Tanemura does it all. Looking at her manga pages you must think it's all done digitally, or at least a portion. But no, it's all traditional. I'm not sure if I have the patience for that method. :c

3. And one of the most important factors... I'm WHITE.
When I first thought up this dream, I really only thought of learning Japanese and waltzing over there to do what I wanted. But I never really thought about the cultural differences.
Yes. I have had people coming to me saying "you can't draw manga because your white" "why do you use copic markers? you're not Japanese, you insult our culture" (which is really stupid because even people who don't draw manga use copics, they're just so amazing) and, above all, "get your big nose out of our culture and stick to your American art". (WUT?)
I can't say this is the greatest picker upper of all time, and sometimes it can be a harsh reality, but I think Japan is probably one of those countries that isn't too accepting towards foreigners. Which I don't understand.

Btw sorry if I offend any of you here, especially if you think I'm insulting the Japanse culture, but honestly, I don't much care. I like drawing manga. Deal with it. :/

But, but but but, but but... but.. but.. BUT.. BUT!

Through all this negativity, dream crushing, racism, and discrimination, there's one hope for me.
And that is my... (my?) dearly beloved HIMEKA.

I used to talk with her on her IRC channel back when she had YouTube (wonder if she still remembers me?). She is the one who's obtained the dream I always thought was so intangible.

If you don't know who she is, she's a girl from Quebec, Canada who learned Japanese though anime and textbooks, and went to Japan to become a singer for anime theme songs.
She has done the opening for Valkyria Chronicles (Asu e no Kizuna) and the ending for the new anime Tegami Bachi (Hatenaki Michi; the single is available November 25th).

You can preview her new single here:
[link]

ANYWAY, she's just incredible. She entered a contest out of 1000 or some w/e contestants, and took first place (which can be seen here: [link] ) and every time I see it... I cry, rofl.

So. Obtaining the weeaboo dream, whether it be through music or manga, or whatever you want - intangible or not?
I think it's possible.

I think if you don't let people bring you down, if you practice hard in both speaking Japanese/making manga/whatever, I think it's possible.
I think I gave up that dream awhile ago, though. :'3 I'm scared of it. I would be fine just making manga here in Canada I think, LOL.

And I really hope you'll be seeing me as one in the future! >v<

Anyway, for those who have that dream, I say, DON'T GIVE UP~! HIMEKA is my number one inspiration, I hope she can be for you too. It makes me believe that anything you want to do is possible with hard work, dedication, and a passion for what you do.

*tear*

Anyway, you can use this stamp by all means. Please do. :3
Hope you enjoy~

<>EDIT: I guess this means I should probably make a HIMEKA stamp... lol owo;

Ocean you make a really good point. And that is something that I've known for quite a while. Having to learn how to speak and read Japanese is difficult and also takes time and patience. One of my friends is actually trying to learn though. I've had my eye more on animation these past years. But I have yet to get a program that's for animation sadly.

I wonder if anyone's gonna try to argue with you about what you said. And those are some weird insults Oo

wow...what a rant lol
I can't believe the knowledge and feelings that have come about since I met you. You have me starting to believe in dreams and happy endings and stuff its really weird lol I like it though. and I think that your right any dream that is nurtured and allowed go grow can come true. The people around us never really stop and think about what they can do to help others dreams come true, but if we all work together. the world really will become a much happier place.

I'll support you and all my friends dreams as best I can and someday if I'm able to help some strangers dreams come true I definitely am going to try.

>.> now *cough* the only way i can think to end this fluffy little comment is
"negative heart, lock on! OPEN HEART!!"

You can draw whatever you damn well please!

Anything is possible. I don't get why people are slammed for having dreams. :< Sure it's harder if you're not in that culture or setting, but impossible? No.

Alot of comic publishers are becoming more open in having artist of all kinds doing comics in manga styles. There are people such as Adam Warren, Ben Dunn, Amy Reeder Hadley, and Mark Crilley making careers out of it. It's just getting your foot out there and doing it. Just keep your head up and stay determined. C:

As for slammers and trolls, art is art, there are plenty Japanese artist that draw cartoons why do people get slammed if its vice versa. Some people just don't have anything else better to do than to bash. Ignore them. If someone makes you feel inferior about drawing, remind them that Osamu Tezuka the godfather of manga was inspired by Disney and american style artwork. Cultures inspire and motivate other cultures.

As for manga tools there's alot digital programs out there the recreate the feel and look of traditional, like Manga Studio. I use it all the time despite the fact I don't draw a lick of manga. Also I use copics and deleter products religiously. (Guess I'll be bashed next being a cartoonist using Japanese products. :XD:)

*favs*

my dream to do the same thing is still in place (though there are many a backup plan). in my opinion, for every person who posts their negative comment there are twenty who post nothing. im still young and my talent is very (very very) unpolished, but with hard work i know i can at least acheive something similar to my dream.

right now i know very little japanese. i can say maybe ten sentences. im not much of a self learner >.< finding out about HIMEKA gave me sooo much hope though. thanks ^.^
